The History of North Island
The United States Navy at North Island in San Diego, California, commissioned this mural to reflect the history of naval aviation at North Island for the lobby of a renovated historic building on North Island. The Navy supplied us with historical information and the more recent photos. Working with the San Diego Aeronautical Museum, we were able to gather good quality historical photos of the notable people and the many obscure but important aircraft that formed the basis of naval aviation.
By blending images of historic North Island buildings in 1926 with recent photos, we created a background in which we arranged many aircraft images in an historical progression, from the earliest Curtiss seaplanes to state of the art aircraft of today. The mural was produced using the Durst Lamda photographic process as a continuous, seamless, 4'x16' mural and installed on their curved lobby wall.
